Individualism and Church
Have you ever found yourself so caught up in the idea of "taking care of yourself" that you start to wonder if maybe the world was right all along about individualism? Like, we're supposed to be self-reliant, right? After all, society tells us it's good to focus on "me"—especially us women. We're told we don’t need anyone to make us happy, to support us, or even to take us on dates. Thanks to Miley Cyrus, we’ve been led to believe that we can dance by ourselves, hold our own hands, and buy our own flowers.
I used to be all about "me." In fact, I even bought a handful of self-help books, hoping they’d boost my confidence and lead to some magical personal growth. But, here's the thing—while I was focusing on "me," I realized something: the more I focused on myself, the less I noticed the people around me. And that got me thinking...
The Problem with "Me-Time": It’s Not About You, It’s About Jesus We’ve been fed this idea that focusing on ourselves is the way to go. It’s like this trend where we make everything about our feelings, our needs, and our growth. But here’s the thing—when I was all about "me," how could I ever really be there for others? How could I put God, my husband, and my kids first if my whole world was revolving around me?
You can’t do it. No matter how much you think you can multitask your own needs and others’ needs, it doesn’t work. And let’s be real—when we’re obsessed with ourselves, we can’t focus on the things that matter most. The Bible actually talks about this. In Philippians 2:3-4, we’re told not to do things selfishly, but to consider others more important than ourselves. And Colossians 3:17 reminds us that everything we do should be in service to God. It’s not about you. It’s about Jesus.
Another lie we’ve all been told.....That we don’t need church to be close to God. I know, I’ve heard it too. “I don’t need church, God’s always with me. He knows my heart.” Yes, that’s true, but here’s the thing—church is more than just a building or a service. It’s about being with a community of people who love God just like you do, and there’s something so powerful about gathering together to worship Him.
I used to think I didn’t need church either. But once I found a church to call home, I realized how much I was missing out. Church isn’t just about ticking a box—it’s about growing spiritually, being discipled, and finding a family that supports you in your walk with God. Satan knows this, which is exactly why he works so hard to convince us we don’t need it. Let's face the truth, satan has many of us thinking we don't need church. WE DO NEED CHURCH.
Matthew 18:20 reminds us that when two or more gather in Jesus’ name, He’s there with us. Why would Satan want us to gather in God’s name? Because the closer we are to God, the harder it is for him to pull us away.
The more I’ve leaned into God, the clearer these lies have become. It’s hard to focus on others when we’re so wrapped up in ourselves. And that’s exactly where Satan wants us—isolated, distracted, and thinking it’s all about “me.” But the truth is, God wants us to focus on Him and the people around us, not just our own little worlds.
So, here’s the challenge: let’s take a step back and remember that it’s not about us. It’s about Jesus. It’s about serving others, building community, and leaning into the people around us. And it’s about making the choice to prioritize church—because that’s where we find real growth and connection. Satan is sneaky, and he knows exactly how to distract us, but we don’t have to fall for it.
Focus on others. Focus on God. And remember, the story of your life isn’t about you—it’s about Him.
